On today's show

Summer is still with us so Lyn Baines has chosen some perfect books to read while trying to stay cool. For lovers of ghost stories, Peter Ackroyd's latest book The English Ghost, will send a chill up your spine. The Story of England by Michael Wood looks at the history of England from Roman times to the 20th century through one village in the heart of England. Following the Detectives edited by Maxim Jakubowski looks at the real life cities where fictional detectives live and work. Chapters on Inspector Morse's Oxford, V I Warshawski's Chicago and Rebus's Edinburgh are illustrated with maps and photos so you can visualise your favourite detectives at work. Three new book on WWI take a different angle on the conflict. Six Weeks by John Lewis-Stempel, Digging up Plugstreet by Martin Brown and Richard Osgood, and Strange Meetings by Harry Ricketts.

Music this week was from Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel.
